“The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” versus the “Harry Potter” series: The Powerful Witches

We grew up with fairytales. We dreamed of clear skies and flowery meadows. Princes and princesses accompanied by little elves and fairies. Those bad witches were always left out, mistreated. There was place only for the “good”, and the evil were always the most hateful. Are they now? Maleficent was not that bad after all… she just wanted to attend the party…

Remember when?

The glorious castle and the land were always described as heaven. We were given definitions of what is right and what is evil, and the evil was always punished at the end of the story. The heroes were fighting the monsters and always won. The fantasy worlds we grew up with always described the evil as ugly, jealous, atrocious, and all the bad words. Those dragons may be hideous, but why hateful? Toothless’ feelings are hurt…

…but maybe Dany’s dragons have a saying in all of this lol.

Now let us get to the point: December may be approaching, Halloween and its spooky season may be over, but… perhaps some are not yet ready to accept that fact just yet. Or is it just us? Every day has its witchy hour at midnight, and there’s time for spooky season anytime.

The world of witchcraft

RiyaazMaison is up for an adventure into the world of magic, so let’s see what two of our favorite witches have in common. Today is all about Hermione Granger and Sabrina Spellman.

Hermione Granger (played by Emma Watson in the movies) is one of the most important characters in the Harry Potter series, and an extremely powerful one. What made her so? She was just a bookworm and a daughter of muggles, yet she saved Harry’s life countless times. She had an amazing character development throughout the series, and not just as a witch. No matter how irritating she was at times, she was always there for her friends. She always came up with solutions if they had problems, she always knew what to do. Initially, she was supposed to be a Ravenclaw because of her witness and intelligence, but she wanted to be a Gryffindor. The house did bring out the best of her courage (perfect performance, Emma, btw).

Now about our little Sabrina Spellman, the interpretation of the character in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (played by Kiernan Shipka), which is part of the Archie comics (Sabrina The Teenage Witch).

The series begins with a few days before Sabrina’s 16th birthday, which was also her “dark baptism”. Sabrina had a big decision to make, which was not exactly her decision because she HAD to embrace her witch side, and leave her human life behind. The character went trough many ups and downs in the first season because she was not ready to accept her fate. Sabrina was convinced that not all witches are bad witches. Some things did change after she signed her name in the book of the beast, and we can seen some differences in the character in the second season where she is a full witch. We won’t give you any spoilers now, don’t worry.

It isn’t, Sabrina.

Once a witch, always a witch

So what do these two powerful girls have in common? Besides the fact that some fans say that the actresses playing the characters kind of look alike?

The resemblance between Emma Watson and Kiernan Shipka is uncanny.

  •  They are both so kind and love their friends more than anything and would do anything for them. There is so much place for love in a witch’s heart.
  • They both are attending a school of witchcraft (Hogwarts and The Academy of Unseen Arts).
  • They are both linked to the human’s world. Hermione’s parents were just dentists while for Sabrina, her father was the high priest of the Church of Night (witch coven) and her mother was just human.  Also, we just realized that both of the characters have cats as pets: Sabrina’s Salem and Hermione’s Crookshanks. Maybe there was not so much attention given to Crookshanks, but Salem is somewhat of a symbol. There are also many memes with Salem from Sabrina The Teenage Witch TV show.
We all do that, Salem.

We are glad the “evil” is finally divided in good AND bad evil? Meaning what? Traditionally, all witches were bad, evil, cursing people and making weird potions that could kill. Now, in the world of this evil, we have good and bad. Yet everything is still evil for muggles?

If you have read the book, now it’s time to binge watch “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”. If you have seen the series, grab “Harry Potter” and start turning pages. Either scenario, strive to become more cultured with the aid of these connections!
